Mesozoic Era Fossils

The Mesozoic Era from the Triassic period through to the Cretaceous period from 260 million years through to 65 million years ago was the age of the dinosaurs and the first mammals. Some of the fossils from the Mesozoic era include dinosaur bones and teeth, coprolite, fossil fish, and ammonites.


Dinosaur Bone, Utah

The dinosaur bone has a distinct shape with a socket. This is gem grade hematite included dinosaur bone from Utah. The speckled red rock shows the bones interior cell structure and takes a high polish. The rock is of more value as a specimen due to the obvious bone and socket shape. The 19 ½ pound, dinosaur gem bone is 13 inches by 6 ½ inches by 4 ½ inches.

One small section is polished showing the interior cell structure as a grainy surface. This dino bone was under extreme temperatures to produce the blueish glalzed appearance. The bone form of the 6 by 3 by 2½ inch fossil makes an interesting display.

As the ammonite is turned in your hand, flashing colors, predominately red on the ribs and green in the hollows, play over the entire surface ; even better in low light. The Madagascar opal ammonite is 2 5/8 inch in diameter. Each half is 5/16 inch thick.

The 8 inch ammonite is sawn into two 3/4 inch halves. The exterior is ground through several layers showing the outer shell, the sutures, and the aragonite with a miniscule amount of opal. The polished interior chambers are filled with yellow calcite. At the outer edge the hollow chambers are lined with yellow calcite crystals.

Whole Polished Ammonite

The 7 inch Callipylloceras ammonite from Tulear, Madagascar is 1 1/2 inch thick. The polished surface highlights the complex suture markings in round lobed fern patterns index this fossil as being from late Triassic to early Jurassic Periods. This is a handsome ammonite with a tight inner curl, broad sweeping curve, and flared opening.
