Calamite Fossil Stem, Mazon Creek Illinois

calamite fossil stem The calamite stem is in a split siderite nodule from the Pennsylvanian Period, about 300 million years ago. Calamite is an extinct relative of the horsetail. The 3 inch split nodule appears to have been glued on one seam. The calamite stem was gathered 25 years ago at Chicago Coal Mine, open pit 11, near Braidwood Illinois. The open pit is now a lake.
