The Paleozoic Era from the Cambrian period through to the Permian period which is 570 million years through to 260 million years was the beginning of life that had hard body parts and could be preserved as fossils such as trilobites, crinoids (sea lillies), other echinoderms, brachiopods, arthropods, the first land plant fossils and the first fossil fish. A dozen pieces of horned coral weigh 2 pounds. Half of them are whole corals. The calcite and silicate replaced horned coral has an interior structure of tubes radiating outward from the center and can be cut into 1/4 slices that are crème colored, translucent and will polish. The larger pieces are 4 inch in length. The horned coral can be cut with a small trim saw.
