Zincite, Franklinite Bookends

The bookends are composed of rare zinc
minerals that are common at Sterling Hill Mine, New Jersey. Primarily
zincite and franklinite, the zinc ore also has streaks of white calcite
and willamite that fluoresce bright red and green under UV light.
The bookends are extremely heavy at 17 pounds which eliminated the
possibility of flat lap polishing on the cut surface. The combination
of gemmy red zincite and metallic octahedrons of franklinite is an
interesting and attractive set of bookends and a great presentation
for a mineral specimen considered rare world wide. |

Petrified Palm Bookends

Petrified palm from the Southern US
has a drift wood weathered exterior. The interior is sheaves of elongated
cells in burled patterns that are streaked with light purple with
purple. There is an unpolished area, 1 inch wide and crescent shaped,
on the right bookend in the wide photo. The bookends are 8 1/2 inch
by 6 inch the wide tall across the face in one direction and 4 inch
by 6 inch tall the other way and they weigh 5.77 pounds. |
