class strontianite specimen is strontium carbonate that formed from
corrosion of celestite (strontium sulfate) that crystallized as
a carbonate. The white spiky crystals form tufts that have a delicate
appearance but are durable specimens. The strontianite formed in
the Tonolaway Limestone layer of Silurian age. Algae mats became
a porous rock layer that was invaded by hot solutions. The solutions
precipitated minerals into pocketed rock layer. Location, Mount
Pleasant Mills, Snyder County, Pennsylvania. 7 by 3 by 2 3/4 inch
thick. |
