by 5 3/4 by 2 1/2 inch thick mineral specimen from Juniata County
Pennsylvania has vugs filled with 1/4 to 3/8 inch, spherical bundled
needle crystals of strontianite (strontium carbonate) on drusy calcite
and celestine (strontium sulfate). In the Tonolaway limestone layer
(410million year old), lineament fractures were filled with hot
solutions that deposited and then altered strontium and calcite.
Openings along the edges of the specimen hold beds of strontianite
not evident in the first photo. This area is shown in the middle
photo. Note the hooked tips in some of the crystathe in the close
up. |
